I am running OS 10.12.5 on a new MBP and have installed the latest version of office for Mac. However, now I come to use it, both excel and powerpoint freeze and run extremely slowly. In particular, working with an excel sheet (+/- 60k lines of data so not massive), every time I moved a chart or tried to change anything I got the multi-coloured spinning ball.for up to 30sece/1min. I had to go back to the works laptop (an antiquated Thinkpad with poor specs) which was able to do the job far better than the spec'd up MBP.
Having read a few things on forums, do I need to run bootcamp and buy a copy of Win10? Or is there an easier solution - seeing as I've bought and paid for Office for Mac?
Sometimes, when you insert a chart, you may want to show different value ranges as. Kutools for Excel: with more than 300 handy Excel add-ins, free to try with no. This does not seem to work in Excel 2016 for Mac. All I get are Colored Horizontal Lines for each X Axis Observation instead of a Multicolored Line Chart.
Hope someone can help Thanks Phil. Hi PAJKBSF, Go to System Preferences Security & Privacy Privacy Tab Accessibility (on left menu), and disable any 3rd party apps that have certain controls over your computer. Additionally, remove any custom add-in from Excel. To do this, in Excel, click Tool Excel Add-in, if you see any custom add-in, please disable them. If disabling the add-ins didn’t solve the problem, please provide the following information:. In Excel, go to the Excel menu and choose About Excel, confirm the version and build.
Do you use it in Normal view or Page layout view?. Do you perform any specific action which causes the problem?.
Is there any error? If so, please provide the screenshot.
Note: In this thread, we will focus on the issue related to Excel. For the issues related to PowerPoint, I’ll suggest you create a new thread in PowerPoint category (OfficePowerPointMacOffice 2016 for Mac), this will help us focus on the issue more efficiently. Thanks, Neha.
Thanks very much for getting back Neha. There are no 3rd party apps on the Accessibility Tab. I don't appear to have any add-ins at all in excel. Pasted the excel details below.
I use excel in normal view. I typically use it for analysing moderate to occasional large data set, plotting charts and trend lines. I realise this can be intensive but as I mention the old PC is able to scatter plot 60,000 lines of data with too much fuss. I checked and it's an i5, 1.79Ghz processor, 4Gb Ram. This has 2.9GHz and 8Gb Ram.?
Thought this would be much better. With regards to error, it just freezes with the multicoloured spinning ball for ages. Thanks again for your help.
Cheers, Phil. Hi PAJKBSF, Let try using safe boot, see if the issue persists.
In safe boot. To do this, please start with the following steps:. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display.
Release the shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder. Once you have started your system in safe mode, test in Excel, see if you still get the same problem. To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup. Also, try creating a new user.
Here’s an with the detailed steps. T he new user's system does not have anything added and Excel runs from scratch. Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology If the issue persists, please do confirm the following points:. At what point Excel freezes?.
If you open a new Excel sheet, will you encounter the same issue. Do you perform any specific action which causes the problem? Meanwhile, please make sure you have installed all the latest version of OneNote and Mac OS.
The current version and build of OneNote 2016 is Version: 15.36.1 (Build 17072101) Thanks, Neha. Morning Neha, Ok - the story so far. I rebooted in safe made. Opened the file and worked on it.
Every time I moved the chart, tried to change something I got the spinning wheel.for up to 40sec. After a couple of changes, involving the spinning wheel, MS Excel quit - attached. Also attached screen shot of the chart I'm messing around with. So, next I created a new user (I've had to do this before so happy with the process). I skipped all the fancy setup process (Siri, Apple ID, etc) so it's base operating. I then opened the file and had the exact same experience. Again.massively long waits for the program to respond to input.
In answer to your questions. Excel freezes (spinning wheel) whenever the chart is moved or I try and change something - format, change data set, etc. If I didn't know better, it looks like the computer lacks the processor/RAM to deal with the file, it being a few lines long. However, I know this not to be the case, as the old laptop I mention above is able to do this without any waiting or fuss (for ref, it's running Excel 2010). Yes, same issue with a new sheet. With regards actions - anything involving the chart (i.e. Actions which will require power (RAM or processor power).
I can't help but think that the Excel version for Mac is somehow not able to run efficiently on an apple device, the same way in which excel functions on a PC (windows system).????? The big question is, if I install Win10 on my Mac via bootcamp (and have to purchase another copy of office, this time for Win10.) will it run quickly.? Thanks again.
Cheers, Phil. Hi Phil, Sorry for the late reply. What version of Excel are you using? Is it 15.36.1 (Build 17072101)? Please make sure you have the latest version. Meanwhile, I’ll suggest you remove the Excel preferences, restart the system and see if this fixes the problem. To remove Excel preference, follow Step 2: Remove the Excel Preferences from this.
Additionally, please provide a sample file for us to test. Please remove any sensitive data from the file. You can upload the file in the following OneDrive link: Thanks, Neha. Please see below, the Excel version (I did paste this into a previous reply). Looks like I need to update.however, I'm struggling to see how this would make a big difference. Again.not sure how removing preferences will help.who's preferences are these, that I'm removing? I'll try and get this done.
Also, I will upload the file. However, in the meantime, can you please answer the question from my previous mail.if I have to install Win10, will I have to buy another copy of Office, this time for windows, as opposed to Mac? Thanks for your help. Cheers, Phil.
